While six were mowed down by the vehicle, other deaths were caused by electrocution.
Thirteen people were killed and over 15 injured after a lorry hit an electric pole and ploughrd into a general store at Yerpedu, 25 km from Tirupati, on the Srikalahasti Highway on Friday. The injured were taken to SVR Ruia Government General Hospital in Tirupati, according to police.
The incident happened right in front of the Yerpedu police station. The lorry, coming from Srikalahasti towards Tirupati, lost control and hit the electric pole first. As the pole capsized, the live wires snapped and fell on people, electrocuting seven. The vehicle then rammed the shop, killing six people on the spot.
The victims had come to the police station to complain against rampant sand mining. All of them were from Munagalapalem, 25 km from Srikalahasti.
Yerpedu is at a ‘T’ junction, leading to Tirupati, Srikalahasti and Venkatagiri towns and the accident spot is close to this junction.
Traffic came to a standstill on all directions. Police officials and ambulances rushed to the spot.
