More than 20 people have been killed and as many injured as a lorry crashed into Yerpedu market area near Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor district.
Over 20 people have been killed and as many injured after a speeding Tirupati-bound lorry first hit an electric pole and then rammed into a crowd at Yerpedu in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.
The incident took place in Yerpedu market area under Srikalahasti division of the district, some 20 kilometres away from Tirupati.
According to an eyewitness, the driver of the lorry coming from Srikalahasti and bound for Tirupati lost control of his vehicle on the highway. The lorry hit an electric pole first and then rammed into a shop where people were standing. While around 6 people lost their lives in the collision, the others died of electrocution.
The people were waiting outside the police station at Yerpedu to submit their applications.
Preliminary reports suggested that all 20 people were run over by the lorry, said a police officer from Chittoor.
The injured people were rushed to the SVR Ruia Government General Hospital in Tirupati and the government hospital of Srikalahasti. The number of casualties could go up as several of the injured are critical.
Deputy Chief Minister N China Rajappa has expressed shock over the incident.
He spoke to the Tirupati Superintendent of Police and instructed that those injured be extended the necessary medical treatment, an official said.
YSR Congress leader Jagan Mohan Reddy has also condoled the loss of lives in the mishap. He has demanded that rescue efforts be expedited and immediate medical attention be provided to the injured.
