The All India Muslim Personal Law Board has decided to suspend Maulana Salman Nadwi.

A member of the aamilah or working committee who did not wish to be identified confirmed the development.

Taking cognisance of meeting the cleric had with Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar over an out of court settlement on the Babri Masjid case, the board had constituted a four member panel which includes president Maulana Syed Rabey Hasani Nadwi, general secretary Maulana Wali Rahmani, secretary Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani and Jamiat-e-Ulama chief and aamilah member Maulana Arshad Madani to probe Maulana Nadwi.

“At the working committee meeting, the Maulana to deflect the situation by bringing up a speech in which spokesperson Maulana Sajjad Nomani said that he has visited RSS camps. He wanted us to take action on this. But the board has said that this is irrelevant and Maulana Nomani has not defined any stand of the board. The announcement was made today at the meeting,” the source said.

In a telephonic response to The Hindu on Saturday, Maulana Nadwi remained defiant and said that he would meet Hindu faith leaders in Ayodhya to discuss an Babri Masjid case in March.
