Stalls devoted to diet, health risks put up; gadgets to monitor disease on display

On World Diabetes Day, several departments of Christian Medical College (CMC) came together to put up an exhibition to educate people on various aspects of prevention and management of diabetes.

This year, the theme for World Diabetes Day was ‘Women and Diabetes’. The departments of Cardiology, Physiotherapy, Dietary, Ophthalmology, Prosthetic and Orthotic Services, Pulmonary Medicine, Dental and Nephrology along with Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism put up a total of 16 stalls.

A total of 775 persons were screened for height and weight, blood pressure and, sugar, while foot examination and footcare education was provided to diabetics.

A stall highlighted proper diabetic diet that can help in keeping blood sugar under control, while a physiotherapy stall taught persons about various types of exercises that are useful in reducing body weight. Persons were informed about cardiovascular disease in diabetes and its prevention at the cardiology stall.

As eye problems were more common in diabetics, screening was done for high risk patients at the ophthalmology stall, while dental screening was done at another stall.

Patients were educated on the need to use footwear made of micro-cellular rubber.

New gadgets such as flash glucose monitoring system were displayed. This device would be attached over the patient’s arm and will sense the interstitial fluid glucose every 15 minutes. This could be worn continuously for 14 days, a press release said.

A cooking demonstration stall for simple recipes for diabetics and a puppet show on diabetes management and its prevention were held. A poster competition titled, ‘How does diabetes affect the patient and family economically?’ was organised.
