Gorakhpur tragedy: As death toll mounts to 68, CM Yogi Adityanath visits BRD Hospital. Latest updates

With nearly 68 lives slipping away in a span of six days at the BRD Medical College in Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister's constituency Gorakhpur, it remains to be seen where the blame shifts to next.

After a series of saving salvos fired by the Yogi Adityanath government on August 12, including suspending the chief of Gorakhpur's Baba Raghav Das Medical college, the chief minister has reached the hospital today along with Union Health Minister JP Nadda.

Under attack from all sides, the UP government on Saturday expelled college principal Dr. Rajeev Mishra, ordered an inquiry into the incident and vowed to continue the fight against encephalitis.

Principal of Ambedkarnagar Medical College, PK Jain has been given the additional charge of BRD Hospital with immediate effect.

The Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical college saw over 68 people including children, infants slipping to their death in six days due to lack of oxygen supply.

A four-year-old boy today succumbed to encephalitis (at the time of publishing).

The state government has set up a committee to be led by the Chief Secretary to inquire into the role of oxygen suppliers in the incident.

Earlier on Saturday, as Yogi Adityanath spoke to the Prime Minister and apprised him of the situation, the Opposition demanded the expulsion of state health and medical education ministers.
