Himachal Pradesh Election Dates To Be Announced At 4 PM

New Delhi: The dates for voting and counting in Himachal Pradesh will be shared by the Election Commission this evening at 4 pm.

Himachal Pradesh has 68 seats and is governed by the Congress. Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh recently incited a revolt with most of the party's 36 legislators threatening to side with him if he is not given a free hand to run the party's campaign. Mr Singh, 83, is being investigated on corruption charges by the CBI; he has denied any wrongdoing. He has served six times as the small hill state's Chief Minister. After his threats, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi recently confirmed that Mr Singh is the party's presumptive Chief Minister.

The state has been governed uninterrupted by the BJP for nearly two decades. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has begun campaigning for his party in his home state and visited it last week. The BJP has 116 of 182 seats; chief Amit shah has declared 'Mission 150', urging party workers to ensure that they "prove their gratitude to the Prime Minister" with an even bigger tally of seats.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has spent this week campaigning in Gujarat too; he has called attention to the economic slowdown, the growing frustration over not enough jobs, and alleged that Mr Shah's son, Gujarat entrepreneur Jay Shah, has benefited from crony capitalism as a result of his father's influence.
