Youth embarks on an expedition to Delhi
Equipped with modest possessions, 33-year-old Kolla Venkat embarked on the arduous journey of pedalling from Tirupati to New Delhi on Wednesday.
Offering prayers at the Alipiri ‘padala mandapam,’ Mr. Venkat commenced his second cycling expedition to the country’s capital to mobilise support to the demand for Special Category Status (SCS) to Andhra Pradesh.
A native of Mentepudi in Veeravasaram mandal of West Godavari district, Mr. Venkat had undertaken a similar exercise in 2016, when he pedalled from Bhimavaram to New Delhi in a bid to spread awareness on the need for according SCS to A.P.
“Owing to the prevailing situation in the State (and elsewhere), I want to carry out a similar exercise from the temple city, after seeking the blessings of Lord Venkateswara. My plan is to reach New Delhi by the second week of March when the Parliament sessions commence,” he told The Hindu. Mr. Venkat would be highlighting the issue through placards fastened to his bicycle, urging the Central government to fulfil its promises to Andhra Pradesh. He plans to travel 100-120 km or more per day.
