"Against the tyranny of fear we stand with our students. For every voice raised in anger, intolerance and ignorance there will be a Gurmehar Kaur," Rahul tweeted. Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal too endorsed Gurmehar's stand against the ABVP and violence on the campus.

NEW DELHI: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Monday expressed his support to Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur, who allegedly received rape threats after her online campaign against the ABVP went viral.

"Against the tyranny of fear we stand with our students. For every voice raised in anger, intolerance and ignorance there will be a Gurmehar Kaur," Rahul tweeted.

The Congress leader's comments come in the wake of the Centre accusing the opposition of giving political overtones to the developments over the Ramjas College protests.

Coming out in Gulmehar's defence, whose campaign drew controversial remarks from BJP leaders, the Congress tweeted, "When a woman thinks independently, patriarchal BJP thinks her mind is polluted. When a person 'bats' for peace, BJP responds with hate. We admire Gurmehar Kaur's courage to stand up against bullies and threats and to fight for rights of her fellow students."

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal too endorsed Gurmehar's stand against the ABVP and violence on the campus. He also attacked the BJP and said it had now become a party of "hooligans" and "criminals".

Sharing a video of Kaur speaking about the rape threats she received, Kejriwal tweeted, "Just listen to this. This is BJP. They will destroy our country. Everyone must rise against their goondaism."

Soonafter, Gurmehar claimed that she was receiving numerous rape and death threats on social media and knocked on the door of the Delhi Commission for Women to register her complaint.
