The police on Thursday arrested a Tamil youth, who is suspected to be a Maoist activist, from Kalkulam in Moothedam grama panchayat near Nilambur in the district.
The police identified the arrested as Ayyappan, alias Hari, 26, son of Ganeshan from Thekkaniyakkan Petti, Kannisseri, in Viruthanagar district near Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu.
Although he was arrested on Thursday, the police confirmed his Maoist connection on Friday. The police said Ayyappan had been in the forest when Maoists Kuppuswami and Kaveri were killed in police firing during a search in the Nilambur forests on November 24 last year.
He was arrested on the basis of a tip-off from the local people. The police said Ayyappan had a degree in electrical and electronics engineering. He has reportedly applied for higher studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
The police said Ayyappan had been hiding in the vicinity of the Maoist camp where Kaveri and Kuppuswami were shot dead. The police said they had got vital information about Maoist activities and moves from Ayyappan.
The police said several pieces of evidence proving his active link with the extremist group as well as the activities of Maoists were seized from him. Currency worth ₹2,000 was found with him, the police said.
He was held under a case filed at the Pookkottumpadam station after a group of Maoists appeared at the Mannala Adivasi colony soon after the November 24 shooting.
