Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro with Snapdragon 636 SoC, dual cameras launched in India: Price, specifications

Xiaomi has announced the launch of the new Redmi Note 5 Pro smartphone, alongside the more affordable Xiaomi Redmi Note 5. The smartphone is a bit more expensive than the Redmi Note 5, and is priced at Rs 13,999 for the base variant. As the name suggests, it is the more capable of the two devices, with features and hardware that offer a significant step-up over the Redmi Note 5, and last year’s Redmi Note 4. The Redmi Note 5 Pro is available in two variants, with either 4GB or 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage standard across both options. The 6GB RAM variant is priced at Rs 16,999.

One of the most noteworthy aspects of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro’s specification list is the SoC. The smartphone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC, and is the first phone in the world to sport this chipset. The Snapdragon 636 is fabricated on the 14nm process, and features eight custom Kryo 260 cores, based on four Cortex A53 cores for efficiency and four Cortex A73 cores for performance. The chipset also features the Qualcomm Spectra 160 image signal processor (ISP), which handles the heavy lifting for the camera.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro employs the hardware to power its second noteworthy feature – cameras. The phone features a dual-camera setup at the rear, with a 12-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor. The camera setup is vertically placed similar to the Apple iPhone X, and uses an RGB setup for both sensors. This enables the capture of additional light and color information, as per Xiaomi, as well as a hardware-backed portrait mode. The phone also features a 20-megapixel front camera with lamp flash. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro uses software-based algorithms to enable portrait mode for the front camera as well, allowing for selfies with the background-blur effect.

Both the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro will be sold on Flipkart, and Xiaomi’s own online store, mi.com/in. The phones will later also be available through the company’s offline channels, including its own Mi Home stores. As the successor to the Redmi Note 4, the Redmi Note 5 Pro will take over as Xiaomi’s key offering in the sub-Rs 15,000 smartphone space. Competition in this space is intense, and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro will hope to take the fight to devices such as the Moto G5S Plus, and the Honor 9 Lite.
