MUMBAI: The number of consumers who have complained about misleading or offensive advertisements has risen exponentially since market regulator ASCI started a mobile application two months ago.
According to a press release issued Thursday, the 'ASCIonline' app has been downloaded 1,000 times since its launch June 17. Complaints through the app now contribute to almost 15% of the total number of appeals received by ASCI.
The app allows people to take a picture of the objectionable ad and despatch it. ASCI's web-based complaint registration system has been functional for three years. Now however, it has received complaints from more than 15 different cities and small towns like Darjeeling, Thiruvallur, Almora, Bikaner, Jalandhar and Hingoli. Consumers have complained against ads from multiple sectors like education, FMCG, healthcare, telecom, e-commerce, durables, automotive, food and beverage across all media.
